A traditional Edwardian conservatory features a single hipped roof, with the slopes meeting at one central ridge. As the conservatory becomes wider, the roof panels required for a standard Edwardian design become larger and less practical.

A double hipped roof allows the main ridge to run parallel with the house rather than at a right angle to it, reducing the size of the individual glass panes and creating a more efficient, well-proportioned roof structure.

This means the roof runs back to the low side, necessitating a gutter to prevent water from pooling between the house and the conservatory.
