Key Features of Bay Windows
Bay windows are made up of multiple window sections joined together to project out from the wall of the property. Common designs include three-sided and curved configurations, creating a wider external view and a more spacious feel inside. Available in uPVC, aluminium, and timber styles, bay windows can be tailored with different glazing, colours, and finishes to suit the character of the home.
What's the Difference Between Bay and Bow Windows
Bay and bow windows both project out from the main wall of the home, bringing in more natural light and creating a wider outlook.
The difference is mainly in the shape. A bay window is usually made up of three sections, with a larger central window and two angled side windows, giving it a more defined, angular shape.
A bow window is normally made from four or more window sections set into a gentler curve, creating a rounded appearance across the front of the property.
Both styles are traditional features, often found on period and character homes, and the right choice usually depends on the existing shape of the opening, the age of the property, and the look you want to preserve.
For modern properties, a bay window with squared corners usually works best.
Adding a Bay Window
A bay window can often be added to a property by extending outward from an existing flat window opening, creating a deeper internal window board and a more open feel inside the room.
The original opening remains the same size, with the new bay structure projecting externally from the wall and being supported underneath by decorative load-bearing brackets fixed to the outside of the property.
A small canopy or tiled roof is then added above to complete the look and protect the installation from the weather. This style of bay installation is a popular way to add character, extra light, and a traditional feature to the home without major structural alteration to the original opening.
Adding a bay while creating additional floor space would require a lintel and building work. You may also need planning permission.

Casement Windows for Bay and Bow Windows
Casement windows are one of the most popular choices for bay window installations thanks to their versatility, clean appearance, and excellent ventilation.
They can be configured to suit the angles and shape of almost any bay, whether traditional or modern, while providing wide opening sections for airflow and easy operation. Modern casement windows also offer excellent thermal efficiency, secure multi-point locking systems, and low maintenance performance, making them a practical choice for homeowners looking to improve both comfort and appearance without losing the character of the bay.
You can replace sash windows with casement windows if you prefer. We'll help you make the right choice and are happy to quote for both. Things to consider, as well as style, are how easy they are to access, whether they open onto a path and the way you like to experience air flow.
Sash Windows for Bay Windows
Sash windows and bay openings have long been associated with some of Britain’s most characterful homes, from elegant Georgian townhouses to Victorian and Edwardian properties.
The combination works beautifully because the vertical lines of sliding sash windows naturally complement the shape and proportions of a bay, helping to create a balanced, timeless appearance both inside and out.
Beyond their traditional charm, modern sash windows offer smooth operation, improved insulation, enhanced security, and reduced maintenance, allowing homeowners to retain the classic look of their bay while enjoying modern performance and comfort.
What is a Bay Window?
A bay window is a window arrangement that projects outward from the main wall of a property, creating extra space inside the room and allowing more natural light to enter from different angles.
Unlike a flat window that sits flush with the wall, a bay extends externally to form a feature on the outside of the home while creating a wider window sill and a more open feel indoors.
Bay windows are commonly found on Victorian, Edwardian, and traditional British homes, although they are also used on modern properties. They are usually made up of three sections with angled sides, while some designs use additional window panels to create a softer curved appearance known as a bow window. Bay windows can be fitted with a range of styles including casement windows, sash windows, and fixed glazed sections depending on the look and functionality required.
