We were delighted to complete this recent double-glazing installation for our customers in Redditch, who wanted to refresh the appearance and performance of their property.

The project included replacing all of the existing windows and doors with REHAU uPVC systems finished in Elephant Grey, transforming the conservatory with a solid tiled roof and upgrading the fascia, soffits and guttering in black.

Our sales adviser spent time with the homeowners to make sure the new products would complement the property and work well together. All of the windows and doors were manufactured in our factory in Stratford-upon-Avon before our installers carried out the work on site.

The glazed panels allow plenty of daylight to pass through into the porch and hallway, making the entrance feel brighter and more welcoming. Finished in the same Elephant Grey as the rest of the windows and doors, the porch doors tie in neatly with the rest of the installation and help create a consistent look across the front of the property

2) Your windows look/feel worn out and they let in leaks and drafts :

If your windows are showing visible signs of rot, warping or is soft to the touch and can possibly break off in your fingers, this will be signs of water damage. Wooden window frames are particularly difficult to manage as if they aren’t sealed properly water can easily infiltrate them and this leads to rot which is very difficult to halt and manage once it sets in. This rot if not properly dealt with can lead to extensive damage. If you have installed a poor quality UPVC window it can quickly discolour and begin to warp as it expands and contracts in the heat. This can lead cracks, chips and holes which are other major signs that your windows need replacing.

3) Your windows have become difficult to open and close:

There are any number of reasons that your windows do not open and shut correctly, this can range from rot, warping, rusting, incorrect installations or perhaps they were in fact painted shut to save time and money! Whatever the reason, if your windows do not open and close properly then they need to be replaced for your safety! If a window has been warped and now is unable to be closed fully and so no longer locks, this is now an easy entrance point for someone to break into your home. On the other hand if there is a fire or some other emergency and your window can’t open, a vital escape route is no longer an option!

4) You struggle to maintain temperatures in your house:

Do you often find that in summer you struggle to keep the heat out and in winter you struggle to keep the heat in even if you have your heating on all day? This is more than likely because the insulation that is on your windows is either ineffective or has failed. In the case of single glazed windows, unless you live in an extremely hot climate, they have very little benefit. The single pane of glass provides little relief from outside noise, is far less secure from intruders and provides almost no insulation from the cold. Double glazed windows use two panes of glass with a layer of Argon gas in-between them to provide insulation from noise and cold, however this can often fail. If you ever see frost or condensation between the two panes of glass, this means that the seal has failed, releasing the Argon gas and making it not much more effective than single glazed windows.

So what are Facias?

Facias, also known as Facia Boards, are the boarding that are mounted along the line where the roof meets the outer walling of a building, an area referred to as the “Roofline”. This board is what you can thank for your home’s roof and guttering staying up as it is the foundation to which they are attached. By supporting the bottom rows of roof tiles, it essentially holds all the other tiles in place. It is also on the Facia Board that your guttering will be attached, this means that it is hugely important to ensure that these Facias are not only pleasing to the eye but also durable enough to cope with the burdens it bears.

But all gutters are essentially the same aren’t they?

True or false: Are all gutters the same? False! In theory, yes – they do serve the same function but choosing the wrong guttering will always come back to bite you. The biggest decision to consider is which material you want to use for your Fascias and gutters. Traditionally both of these products have been produced using a wide variety of materials, ranging from timber, different metals, concrete or inferior plastics. The issues with all these materials is not only are they often expensive to initially produce and install, they are also not well suited to deal with both the wet winters and dry summers that the UK has to offer. The most important reason that renters and homeowners surveyed said they would upgrade the windows in their home, was for Improved Energy Efficiency. More than half of those surveyed; 52.4%, highlighted Improved Energy Efficiency as a main reason to upgrade their windows.

More than one third (37.5%) said that More Natural Light in the Home was important, closely followed by; again over one third (34.9%) who cited Noise Reduction as a top reason to change their windows.

The next most important was that their windows were Old or Broken (24.8%).

Now, Bright Blue, a Conservative-led think tank, has made new proposals for punishing homeowners who haven’t made necessary improvements to their homes.

EPC Rating to Determine Sale of Home

The most radical suggestion in the report is that the government could prevent the sale of homes which don’t meet the minimum requirements for energy efficiency. A minimum EPC rating could be introduced, to block the sale of less energy efficient homes, but a required level was not mentioned.

In other proposals, the think tank said that homeowners should be forced to make energy improvements – including new boilers or insulation – when they carry out other home improvement works. Nevertheless, to improve draughty homes can be expensive, which is probably why some homeowners put off making the energy efficient changes. The think tank has accompanied these tough new regulations with suggested funding schemes, such as a ‘Help to Improve’ loan and ISA.

Preventing Draughts

Tackling draughty homes needs a number of approaches. Homes without double glazing or triple glazed windows will fail to meet energy standards, and homeowners should really consider updating their windows.
