January is often a time for detoxing the body after weeks of overindulgence – but how about a thorough cleanse and purge in the home? If you’ve neglected a certain room or put off those odd jobs in 2015, make it your New Year’s resolution to get them sorted in 2016. Keep clutter to a minimum and don’t be afraid to make bold updates to the interior and exterior of your home. Here’s a few ideas for a New Year detox of your house…
Sort out your storage
This is the ideal time of year to get rid of what you don’t use – out with the old and in with the new. Where is the space for all of those new Christmas presents? It’s time to be ruthless with whatever is in your wardrobe, drawers and cupboards. If you haven’t used it or worn it in the last year, why keep it? Do the same with everything in your kids’ bedrooms, saving clothing and toys which are in good use for your local charity shop.
While you’re organising your storage, why not do the entire house – including the garage and utility cupboard. De-clutter everywhere step by step, so you’re ready for the fresh start and the New Year ahead.
Edit your décor
We all love a few cushions scattered around, trinkets and candles and other decorative items. But how much is too much? Take a step back and assess your living space once all of the festive decorations have been removed. Do you really need all of those little knick knacks? Does every part of the sofa need to be covered in cushions and throws? Sometimes less is more, so have a good accessory edit.
Consider home improvements
Each year you should think about what needs to be done to maintain and improve your home. Make a list and order the jobs in regards to priority – what can wait for a few years, and what needs addressing as soon as possible? Things like guttering and fascias should be in good order, especially throughout the winter, so don’t put these sorts of jobs off. Other projects you’d like to take on, such as sanding floors or redecorating the kitchen can always wait. But make sure you get them done eventually so you’re living in the home you want and enjoy living in.
