A former garage situated in London’s high end Mayfair neighbourhood has sold for a record breaking £24m. The mews house is now the most expensive mews house every to be sold, with the average price ranging from £1.5m-£5m.

43 Reeves Mews is a four storey property which dates back to 1734, where it was used as a stable quarters for the house servants of the mega rich Grosvenor Square residents. However in the 1920s, it became a garage which housed the sports cars of London’s super-rich.

As the property has now been converted into a seven bedroom home, you can imagine the amount of cars the affluent residents used to keep in this former garage. The luxury property was developed into an impressive mews house by Fenton Wheeler, and was put on the market at £24m last year. At 6,250 sq ft, it is unusually large for a mews house, and features a patio, a rooftop terrace, a cinema, a gym and its very own (smaller) garage.

The mews conversion, unlike many others, is predominantly above ground and taller than most. Because they are discreet, they often attract high profile buyers. With a price tag of £24m, we’re guessing that the buyer would have to be very high profile to afford this slice of luxury in the capital.

While converting your garage may not earn you millions such as this mews house conversion, it could add value to your property.

Garage conversions are becoming more and more impressive, as more people choose to transform the dingy spaces into a functional, amazing space. Whether it serves as an extension to a kitchen or dining room, a separate gym or yoga room or a dedicated entertaining space, many people are moving the car to the drive and taking advantage of every square inch of space. Homeowners with large garages can even convert them into small flats, with a living area and kitchen and even a bathroom – as a separate apartment or “granny flat” attached to the house.
