This week we have sent one of our fitting team to do a special requested manufacture and installation for a customer in Wiltshire. With our new range of eleven different coloured woodgrain effect PVCu double glazed windows, there really is something for everyone. In the winter we get quite a few calls regarding condensation on windows. This seems to fall into two categories - people with ordinary double glazed PVCu windows and those with the new energy rated ones. However here the similarity ends.

Since receiving our BFRC accreditation a while back for our energy rated PVCu double glazing, we have been impressed with the feedback from our customers. All have told us of the change they have noticed to their homes. Quite apart from the fact that our windows look great, the amount of heat retention is very noticeable. This is definately the time of year for us receiving many telephone calls regarding broken glass units in conservatories, French doors and patio doors. If you have a rotary lawn mower, there are several things that you can do to prevent this rather costly occurrance.
Bear in mind how fast a stone is flung after contact with a mower blade and even though all of these large glass units are toughened, the stone will still shatter the outer pane of glass. It is very rare for one to go through both.....

It seems that the message is only very slowly getting through about things like household energy efficiency, insulation of cavity walls, loft insulation and the like. PVCu double glazed windows work so well these days that condensation can occur when new windows are installed. This is because, if all of the windows are kept completely closed, there is nowhere for water vapour from washing, cooking, breathing etc to escape.

With the first frosts of winter not that far away, now is a good time to check all of your double glazed panels, or units as they are called in the trade. Do they show signs of misting occasionally that you cannot wipe off? If this is the case, the main seal in the unit has started to fail. From October this year, all new window installations will have to be carried out by BFRC and FENSA registered installers and all new windows will have to be officialy registered 'C' or 'A' rated windows.
Of course if you are in luck if you are currently having your windows installed by Prior Products, as we are already BFRC licensed and have been making energy rated windows for a while now!

Our standard 'C' rated windows are fitted with argon filled 28mm Planitherm total double glazed units. These have excellent insulating properties and as the name implies the glass is crystal clear.

There are two main types of condensation that occur on double glazed windows. Inside, on standard double glazed windows is down to two factors. Lack of continuous ventilation, eg trickle vents closed, night vent positions not use, or an existing damp problem in the house.

We get a number of calls each week at this time of year regarding condensation on the outside panes of glass on our 'A' rated windows. This is not a fault with the window - quite the reverse! Because these windows transmit barely any heat from the inside of your house to the outside, the outer pane mists up when weather conditions are right.
This will quickly clear as the day warms up. A normal double glazed window looses a proportion of the house internal heat through the inner pane and airgap....
